Work Harder for Someone Else
In addition to being National Pharmacists Day, today, January 12, is also Work Harder Day. So if you happen to pop into a Walgreens or CVS this afternoon, be sure to thank a hard-working pharmacist. As for working harder yourself, it’s Saturday! After putting in a full week at the office, today’s your day to take a little time for yourself and your family, right?
We all need a little downtime to recharge and reconnect, and for most of us, that happens on the weekends. So as far as Work Harder Day goes, it’s mighty bad timing. That being said, however, why not use the inspiration to refocus your stellar weekday work ethic into working harder for others today.
Here are a few ideas on how a couple hours of effort can make a big difference for someone else:
- Drop off a few canned goods at the local food pantry; then stay a while and help with sorting and stocking.
- Visit a nursing home or children’s hospital and spread some cheer by reading a book, playing a game, or just interacting with those could use a boost (be sure you check the rules and get permission, if required, at the facilities you choose).
- Walk or play with a dog at your local pet shelter…bring the kids if it’s allowed.
- Check in on a neighbor who lives alone; stay for a visit or help out with simple chores or household tasks.
- Grab a garbage bag and head to your neighborhood park for a mini clean-up initiative.
- Volunteer at your place of worship (if you have one)…chances are there’s a long list of duties that need attention, anything from watering plants and flowers to cleaning and setting up for services.
- Charity begins at home…help a loved one with a project or lend a hand with everyday tasks that usually fall to another member of the family.
“Hard work is painful when life is devoid of purpose. But when you live for something greater than yourself and the gratification of your own ego, then hard work becomes a labor of love.” -Steve Pavlina
Why not take today, and maybe even one Saturday each month, to give of yourself for the betterment of others? In addition to helping those who can use a hand, you’ll be feeding your soul and recharging your battery as you step away from your own personal stresses and commitments. After all, come Monday, it’s back to the office, where every day is work harder day!
