Don’t Lead Like the Taxman
It’s that time of year again: tax season. Like it or not, you’ve got to file; and chances are, you’re as overwhelmed and confused about the process as everyone else. Taxation rules and laws are numerous, complex, and varied, and to compound matters, they change yearly. There are exceptions to the exceptions and forms on top of forms, all compiling into a befuddled mess that most don’t have the time, energy, or desire to fully understand. Which is why tax time is often as dreaded as a root canal.
What frustrates most people about taxes, besides the fact that they have to pay them, is that the process is anything but straightforward, easy, or clear-cut. The inconsistencies in policies (like different rates depending on income brackets, marital or dependency status, etc.) as well as the technicalities, exclusions, and “hidden” laws that exist, make navigating your tax return a task often best left to professional CPAs or taxation specialists.
As a leader, be careful not to run your business or department like the taxman–operating in a culture of dread, fear, inconsistencies, and confusion. People look for a leader to inspire, motivate, and challenge them, not to overwhelm and frustrate them.
As a WOW leader, you need to:
- Be clear. Communicate your expectations and directives clearly and concisely, ensuring that everyone understands the “what” and “why” behind the agenda.
- Be fair. Keep everyone on a level playing field, never showing favoritism or bending the rules for one over the other.
- Be consistent. Don’t change your policies, rules, and practices inconsistently or unpredictably. Stay consistent and focused so your staff can be, too.
- Be accessible. Make yourself available and approachable so your team is comfortable asking questions, verbalizing issues, and expressing concerns.
- Be positive. Lead through positive reinforcement of best efforts, not fear of reprisals for mistakes.
Don’t lead like the taxman–be a WOW leader and you’re guaranteed a high-rate of return!
